Diagnostic Radiology

Esphagus/Swallowing Function - Fast 2 hrs. prior to appointment

GI Series - Fast after midnight

GI Small Bowel - Fast after midnight

Small Bowel Only - Fast after midnight

Oral GB - 48 hrs. prior to study pick up pills at radiology office. Fat-free foods 1st day. Take GB pills after 8 p.m. 2nd day - Fat-free foods. Take GB pills after 8 p.m. and fast after 2nd dose.

Barium Enema - Stop at radiology office for prep kit. Follow instructions for 24 hr. prep contained in kit. Fast after midnight.

Arthrogram - No prep. Must sign consent form. If a minor, must have a parent/guardian signature.

 

Mammography

Mammogram - No underarm deodorant, powders, or perfume prior to study. Limit caffeine intake 72 hrs. prior to study.

 

Bone Density

DEXA Scan (Bone Mineral Study) - No calcium supplements 24 hrs. prior to appointment. No Fosamax day of exam. No barium, nuclear medicine studies, or IV contrast studies 1 week priorto appointment. Wear jogging suit or elastic waist slacks. No zippers or metal over spine or hips.

 

Ultrasound

Thyroid - No prep

Breast - No prep

Renal - No prep

Transvaginal - No prep

Scrotum - No prep

Extremity - No prep

Infant Hips - No prep

Carotid Doppler - No prep

Arterial Doppler Legs - No prep

Venous Duplex Legs - No prep

Abdomen Complete - Fast after midnight

GB Ultrasound - Fast after midnight

Liver Ultrasound - Fast after midnight

Pancreas Ultrasound - Fast after midnight

Aorta - Fast after midnight

Retroperitoneal Complete - Fast after midnight

Gyn Non OB - 30 to 40 oz. liquid - Start drinking 1 1/2 hrs. prior to appointment finishing 1/2 hr. prior - Maintain full bladder.

Pregnancy 1st Trimester - 30 to 40 oz. liquid - Start drinking 1 1/2 hrs. prior to appointment finishing 1/2 hr. prior - Maintain full bladder.

Pregnancy 2nd Trimester - 20 oz. liquid - Start drinking 1 1/2 hrs. prior to appointment finishing 1/2 hr. prior - Maintain full bladder.

Pregnancy 3rd Trimester - 16 oz. liquid - Start drinking 1 1/2 hrs. prior to appointment finishing 1/2 hr. prior - Maintain full bladder.

Bladder Ultrasound - 30 to 40 oz. liquid - Start drinking 1 1/2 hrs. prior to appointment finishing 1/2 hr. prior - Maintain full bladder.

Prostate Ultrasound - Fleet enema 2 hrs. prior to exam.

 

Computed Tomography

CT - Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours before the exam. Please arrive 1 hour prior to appointment for a abdomen and 2 hours for a abdomen and pelvis. You may also stop by our office anytime before your appointment and pick up the barium to drink it at home.

 

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI - Hazleton Radiology Associates calls all our MRI patients the day before their scheduled appointments to verify insurance and appointment time. Please notify our staff of any metal you may have in your body or if you are claustrophobic or think you might be. Try to dress in clothing without metal snaps, zippers, etc.

MRI of the Abdomen - Is the only study which requires you to fast for 6 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. No other preparations are necessary.
