Bone Density
Osteoporosis is a leading cause
of disability amoung older people. It is a silent, progressive
disease characterized by decreased bone density and increased
susceptibility to fracture especially in the spine and hips.
Women are at the greatest risk.
Factors effecting bone loss are menopause, medications and other
risk factors.
DEXA scan is one of the most
widely used detectors of bone mineral density. The use of low
dose radiation in conjunction with highly sophisticated computerized
analysis provides unique and accurate information about bone
density.
The test will be done by a
registered radiologic technologist who will be with you at all
times. Our radiologist will go over the DEXA scan and analysis
and will interpret the results.
* Preparation for the
exam.
You may wish to wear comfortable slip on slacks without metal
snaps or zippers. Calcium supplements should not be taken the
day of the exam. Bring a list of current medications. A bone
DEXA scan should be scheduled at least a week after any procedure
involving barium (such as an upper GI series, barium enema,
CT scan with contrast and nuclear medicine test.
* During the exam.
This test is simple and painless. You will be asked to lie on
your back and on your left side. You will not be enclosed in
any way during the exam. A movable scanning arm passes above
your spine and hips. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes.
